We believe that students learn best when their hands are on the keyboard, interacting with Cloud software, and solving problems. Consequently, our courses consist of short 3—to 4-minute videos separated by interactive exercises. Videos teach students the concepts necessary to solve the following exercises. A course is intended to cover a similar amount of material as a 3-hour workshop.

In general, a cloud course is structured as follows:

  • A course is made up of 3 chapters

  • A chapter consists of 3 to 4 lessons

  • A lesson includes 1 video and between 2 to 4 exercises* (with a minimum of two Cloud Exercises)

With the focus on interactivity, we recommend keeping non-interactive exercises, such as Multiple-Choice Questions, to a minimum. Think of a lesson as a basic unit of a course—a lesson must have at least one clear learning objective, and that learning objective(s) should be tested in the associated exercises.

However, chapter one will have one additional “hook” lesson at the beginning. The course specs README file provides more details on the structure.

A note on Cloud Exercises

DataCamp cloud courses use a unique Cloud Exercise type. This is a relatively new type of exercise, and its UI may be updated.

Regardless, the core technology of a Cloud Exercise remains the same: In cloud exercises, learners are given access to a Cloud service account. The exercise asks learners to complete a task in this Cloud account and culminates with a multiple-choice (or fill-in-the-blank) question.
