Before we begin content development, we'd like to take the time to introduce you to our process to ensure that your DataCamp experience and your content are as successful and enjoyable as possible.

The Content Creation Process

1. Course Specification (Course Spec)

The first step in creating your course is the course spec, a detailed blueprint outlining the course structure, target audience, and key content. This phase involves collaboration between Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) and Curriculum Managers (CMs).

During the course spec phase:

  • The SME works with the CM to define the course audience, establish a high-level outline, and brainstorm topics aligned with DataCamp’s curriculum goals.

  • The course spec is housed in the course’s README file in the GitHub repository.

  • A sample video and exercises are created to set the tone for the rest of the course.

Once the course spec is complete:

  1. It is reviewed by a Content Developer (CD).

  2. Feedback is provided, and the SME incorporates changes as needed.

  3. After the CM and CD have aligned, an official handoff takes place, transitioning the SME and the course into the course development phase.

2. Content Development

In this phase, the SME works closely with the CD to build and refine the course content. The goal is to create a production-ready course that meets DataCamp’s high standards.

Responsibilities of the SME:

  • Content Creation: Develop slides, scripts, exercise files, and interactive exercises.

  • Content Formatting: Fix typos, format slides, and exercises, and resize images as needed.

Role of the CD:

  • Guidance and Feedback: The CD provides reviews, ensures quality, and offers support throughout the development process.

  • Schedule Management: The CD works with the SME to establish a delivery schedule and manage deadlines. It is important for the SME to communicate any changes in their schedule proactively.

Courses are built lesson-by-lesson and chapter-by-chapter, creating a clear workflow and narrative. This incremental approach allows for better feedback, as the CD can review each chapter in the context of the overall course.

3. Launch Preparation:

Once the course is production-ready, the CD prepares it for launch using DataCamp’s course launch system. After the course is launched, it becomes available to learners on DataCamp.com!

Who Will You Be Working With?

As an SME, you will collaborate with the following key team members at DataCamp:

  • Curriculum Manager (CM): The CM supports the SME during the course spec phase, ensuring the course aligns with DataCamp’s curriculum goals and platform capabilities.

  • Content Developer (CD): The CD partners with the SME during course development, providing feedback on exercises, slides, and other course components to maintain quality and consistency.
